TD's Top Prospects-#17 Batter

Posted by Lionel on April 29, 2009.

Ryan Flaherty

Rank: #17 Batter (TD), #8 prospect (BA), #8 prospect (BP)

Age: 22

Position(s): SS

Team(s): Boise

Acquired: Drafted in the 1st round, supplemental pick (2008)

'08 Key Composite Stats: .297 BA, 8 HR's, 112 total bases in 219 AB's, 16 errors

Breakdown: Flaherty's stick made him a 1st round pick for the Cubs and his production at the plate made him a Northwest League All-Star. However, Flaherty's defense dropped him to 17 on the list according to TD. His 112 TB's in 219 AB's gave him a sluggling percentage of .511, ranking him third in the Northwest League and just outside the organization's top ten. The shortstop's 8 HR's rank him eighth in the organization in HR's per AB. Throw in 4 of 6 stolen bases in 56 games and you have a guy who can hit, hit for power, and steal some bags. But his 16 errors would translate to 46 over the course of a 160 games. Hopefully, a full season of professional baseball will allow him to develop defensively, because it's obvious he has the bat.

TD's Top Prospects-#17 Pitcher

Posted by Lionel on April 26, 2009.

Andres Quezada

Rank: #17 Pitcher (TD)

Age: 23

Position(s): SP, RP

Team(s): DSL Cubs

Acquired: Signed as a non-drafted free agent (2006)

'08 Key Composite Stats: 0.34 ERA, 37 strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings, 1.10 WHIP

Breakdown: If Quezada wasn't 23 and pitching in the DSL, he'd easily be a top 10 pitcher. The reason the 23 year old righthander found himself in the DSL for the third year was that the Cubs decided to move him from a position player to the mound. I think it was a success. His 0.34 ERA was the lowest among all pitchers in the Cubs organization with at least 20 innings pitched. He gave up one earned run. 3 of his 13 appearances were starts, while he finished 5 contests, including 3 saves. His 1.41 K/IP put him fifth in the organization.
