Spring Training exposes Cubs Draft Success

While most people focus on the final 25 man roster, there is a lot going on on the minor league fields. As the big league teams get ready to break camp, so to do the minor leaguers, meaning that there are some inevitable cuts from the organization. As such, the Cubs made 10 cuts in the past week. Among them...

Ryan Harvey-Harvey was the 6th overall pick of the 2003 draft. An All Star in '04, '05, and '06, he hit a combined .224 last year between Daytona and Tennessee.

Grant Johnson-Johnson was the Cubs 1st pick of the 2004 draft, although it came in the 2nd round. Johnson went 2-7 with a 5.55 ERA last year between Daytona and Tennessee, splitting time between the rotation and the 'pen.

Mark Pawelek-Taken 20th overall, Pawelek was the Cubs 1st round pick in 2005. Recovering from injury, Pawelek only made 13 appearances in 2008, all for Boise, with a 6.20 ERA.

So, for those keeping track, the Cubs managed to cut their top draft picks in three consecutive drafts in a week's time. Between the three, the Cubs have paid a total of over 5 million dollars to see them waste away in the minors.
