TD's Top Prospects-#23 Batter

Posted by Lionel on March 26, 2009.

Nelson Perez

Rank: #23 Pitcher (TD), Unranked Prospect (BA)

Age: 21

Position(s): RF, CF

Team(s): AZL Cubs

'08 Key Composite Stats: .305 BA, .656 slugging percentage, 10 triples

Acquired: Signed as a Non-drafted Free Agent (2006)

Breakdown: Perez would be higher on the list if he weren't a 21 year old in his second year in rookie ball and if he hadn't made 4 errors in less than 40 games as an outfielder. While he played mostly center, BA projects him as a rightfielder in the future. But on to the impressive offensive numbers. He had 7 doubles, 10 triples and 9 HR's in just 154 AB's, meaning he had an extra base hit in almost 17% of his AB's. He lead the rookie league in both triples and HR's, as well as slugging percentage (which would seem obvious given the fact he lead the league 3 base hits and 4 base hits). His 10 triples would seem to show blazing speed; but his 3 of 6 stolen bases don't. As mentioned in the Starlin Castro breakdown, it's more the ballpark than the man. In any case, he's second among Cubs prospects in triples and extra base hit percentage, and in the top ten in total bases per AB, slugging percentage, OPS, and AB's per HR.
